Momelo Nasal Spray Suspension

Pharmacology

Momelo nasal spray contains a combination of olopatadine hydrochloride and mometasone furoate monohydrate.

• Olopatadine is a histamine-1 (H1) receptor antagonist that inhibits allergic responses.
• Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory properties, reducing inflammation by inhibiting multiple cell types and mediators involved in the inflammatory response.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

• Local nasal reactions (e.g., epistaxis, nasal ulcers)
• Drowsiness and impaired mental alertness
• Increased risk of glaucoma and cataracts
• Hypersensitivity reactions such as wheezing
• Immunosuppression leads to increased infection risk
• Hypercorticism and adrenal suppression

Dosage & Administration

The recommended dose is two sprays in each nostril twice daily. Shake the bottle before use. Prime the spray before first use by releasing six sprays. If not used for 14 days or more, re-prime with two sprays. Avoid contact with the eyes or mouth.

For pediatric use, safety and effectiveness in patients under 12 years of age have not been established.

Interaction

• Central Nervous System Depressants: Avoid the use of alcohol or CNS depressants as they may cause drowsiness and impair mental performance.
• CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Caution should be used when coadministering with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, as they may increase the plasma concentration of mometasone furoate.

Contraindications

Momelo nasal spray is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is no data on the use of mometasone furoate in pregnant women. Mometasone may pass into breast milk, though concentrations are likely low. Caution is advised when used during pregnancy or lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

• Nasal mucosa monitoring: Watch for nasal ulcers, perforations, and infections.
• Drowsiness: Avoid tasks requiring mental alertness like driving.
• Vision issues: Monitor for glaucoma and cataracts in patients with a history of eye issues.
• Infections: Use caution in patients with infections, such as tuberculosis or herpes simplex, as corticosteroids can exacerbate these conditions.
• Growth suppression: In pediatric patients, monitor for any reduction in growth velocity.

Storage Conditions

Store upright with the cap on at room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Do not freeze.
